Enrique's Journey, winner of the Pulitzer Prize, has already been selected by 26 universities and dozens of high schools across the U.S. as the freshman read. The book has been so popular because many educators want their students to better understand the growing number of immigrants in their midst. In schools with large Latino populations, teachers tell me the book is moving on a very personal level for students who rarely see some part of their own story and lives in print. Students each week email me from around the country to say that they were raised racist or anti-immigrant, and that the book and discussions surrounding it have forced them to question their values.
Many students have been moved to act to help migrants and also to help create jobs in central america so fewer women and children feel forced to leave their countries and come to the U.S.
Come hear me speak about the book and about the growing presence of immigrant students in the nation's classrooms on Saturday, Nov. 21, at 2.45pm to 4pm.
