I understand completely. Although I taught at a public school, the same held true for my boys. As a matter of fact, I had started teaching an all boys English class and the boys chose their novels and we worked on projects that appealed to their c...

I teach at an all-boys private school. I have found that most of the YA literature that they were subjected to in middle school had effectively killed any love for literature that they may have had--and these are typically high-performing guys. So...

I appreciate your words of support. And...that brief 20 minutes, as you can imagine, only scratched the surface of the differences between girls and boys. Everyday, neuroscience is discovering new variations on brain theory and development. I sure...

Tech on the Go

Gotta say that Tech on the Go has worked for me! Carla Beard taught me how to write a self-test on Moodle, something I will definitely use! I am working with teachers to develop ACT like questions that correspond to classroom curriculum...you know, Tests That Teach. AND I learned how to develop a classroom Ning from Ms. Beach. Thanks to you both.

First Full Day: NCTE 2009

What a day!

Julie Andrew, Alfred Tatum, Linda Rief, Jim Burke, Stacy Somppi, Tiffanie Goff, and Tom Lynch not to mention all the other inspiring educators that I met between and within the NCTE sessions at this year’s annual convention in Philadelphia.

To provide you some flavor of my day, let me share some of their words and ideas. Julie Andrews credited her father with giving her an appreciation of nature’s wonders. I didn’t know Andrew’s father was a teacher. She spoke of the education she… Continue

Blogging Around

Okay, so it's January and I finally get it! I have a blog at www.dconrad3.wordpress.com and that is where I did all my blogging during the 2008 NCTE convention. Today, in 2009, I realize that I could have been posting blogs here, as well...

Go to my blog, Notions and Potions, and see what I had to say then about what proved to be a professionally motivating and intellectually stimulating conference! You can also learn more about me and my interests in education and humanitarianism.

Playing around

I have had so much fun the last two days...the workshops are stimulating; the company is richly intellectual; and the weather sure beats the cold of the northern U.S.!!

Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family as well. Hopefully you were directed to NCTE Central -- the registration area in the Exhibit Hall. There is where lost and found was housed. I hope you have a great trip home, see you in Indy at the WLU Convention in July or next year at NCTE Anuual Convention.

Hi Dea,

MIT university is trying to build a free resource to help kids learn SAT/ACT thru the power of user-generated images and video. We are currently running a nationwide contest, challenging kids to make fun and memorable flashcards by pairing sentences and images to a common test word. There will be a small cash prize and iTunes giveaways. Due date is May 22.

More details at brainyflix.com/main/contest_rules. Do you have students or colleagues who would be interested?

Dea -- Thanks so much for sharing that story! I am still chuckling a bit as I type this. I remember the first part. I was multi-tasking and felt bad that I couldn't stay at that table a bit longer. I'm glad to hear that Web English Teacher is doing its job by helping teachers find resources they can use!

See you in Philly?

Hi Dea;
Thanks so much for your comments about To Understand -- the greatest pleasure for me is when superb teachers find affirmation in its pages and when the book helps them think of ways to create new learning experiences for kids -- not implement what i suggest, but to truly create new thinking for themselves and their students -- that's my goal. I'm so happy that there are people out there like you who find that approach helpful. Very best,
ellin

Hi, Dea. Let me know if I can be of support as you make your way toward your PhD. I will return to read some of your comments, as we are in some of the same groups here on NING.

Has anyone been able to track down these materials? I loved the presentation, but the presenters ran out of handouts. I signed up for the email list, but haven't heard anything yet. Just wondering if anyone saw materials on here?
