Thank you, Nina. Great list of books. Have your students read any of them yet? I would love to learn of their responses. Yvonne

Aloha - I just returned from South Korea. While there I read three good books about Korea that you might want to check out. The best of the three was the Calligrapher's Daughter by E. Kim which is about the sad history of South Korea from 1906 unt...

Many would rather turn their face re: poverty. So instead they make lame laws to pretend that they are doing something of importance.

Mike, You hit it on the nail. WE are moving towards standardization in all areas. There is little room for diverse thinking. I just talked to a parent this evening who was telling me that the teachers don't have basic supplies and yet, the school...

Standing Up to the Madness by Amy Goodman and David Goodman . Amy Goodman is host of Democracy Now.

Picked up a book at the airport today. Title: Standing Up to the Madness by Amy Goodman and David Goodman. This book unveils so much.

In the first sentence of the introduction, Amy and David quote Sinclair Lewis and Huey Long: "When fascism comes to America it will be wrapped in the American flag." I have been thinking about how far from democracy this country has strayed, and so this first sentence caught my attention.

There is a section about librarians and how important they are and what ha… Continue

Ravitch's Advice to Arne Duncan

Published in Washington Post: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/01/09/AR2009010901525.html?sid=ST2009010901695&s_pos=top

You have a chance to make a historic difference by abolishing the No Child Left Behind legislation. Signed into law in 2002, this law has turned our schools into testing factories, narrowed the curriculum to the detriment of everything other than reading and math, and prompted states to claim phony test score gains.

The law's remedies don't work.… Continue

I will really miss not attending. The convention is just not at a good time in my semester this year. Have a great time--I know you will.

Thanks for connecting with me, Y! I would have loved to come to Charleston to work with with you and get to know you better. The Leadership Meetings are a great opportunity to accomplish much and do the professional networking thing, but it's also fun! I've made some of my deepest NCTE friendships there and can't wait to be back next year. In the meantime, PLEASE extend to everyone a "hello" from me and extend to all the invitation to come to Philly!! If they have any questions, I'm always here on the NCTE Ning! Best to you and safe trip.

If you are not already committed, maybe we can have lunch Sunday when I get in. I should be at the hotel by noon, maybe before.

I don't really know anything yet about the person. We were thinking maybe giving out conch shells to a select number of people to blow at the opening ceremony, or giving everyone a little shell??? We'll talk in Charleston. What time do you get there? I think my flight comes in around 10:30 am Sunday. My email is susan_15ym@yahoo.com or houser-murphys@pcsb.org. I look at both all the time . Seee you soon!

Hi Yvonne,
I received a message saying that you were having trouble reaching a particular discussion. Please try this link: http://ncte2008.ning.com/forum/topics/kamp-kidlit-and-the-emotive (there was a dash missing between "kamp" and "kidlit" in the url). Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks!

Whoops, I forgot--another short person, but you won't be wearing bifocals! Got it, I think... :)

Thanks for your reply, Yvonne. Your photos tell the whole story of why you miss Hawai'i. Beautiful. Colorado is beautiful too, but I know exactly what you mean. How long have you been away and how often do you get home?

Thanks also for your "friends" message. I couldn't wear bifocals for years because I also have a vertigo problem, but last year my ophthalmologist gave me some new, "progressive" lenses to try and they've been great. I still have full reading lenses for close work, computer work, etc., but I wear the progressives for just about every other purpose and I love them. Now I don't have to constantly put on and take off my reading glasses when I'm trying to read store labels (among other benefits)! If you're interested, I can ask my doctor for more specific information.

I'll look for another short person (I'm short too) wearing bifocals as I make my way around the Convention Center! :)

Aloha,

Diane

I'll keep an eye out for you, Yvonne.

I'll look up the meles you mentioned, but I lean toward more American country and folk tunes at the moment, and at the moment I'm still pretty green at it.

Take care,

Laurence

Thanks, Yvonne,

Sounds like a beautiful person that Auntie Nona.

I asked because I've just started playing the ukulele myself. I began this summer taking lessons at the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago from Lanialoha Lee. I bought a concert Lanikai uke and love playing songs on it. I also just ordered a soprano Lanikai so I could have one at work with me. I actually started taking lessons because my wife was taking guitar lessons at the Old Town School, and I got a little jealous. I think the uke fits my personality better than a guitar--simple and a little joyful. I also like that I can take it almost anywhere with me, like when I travel to conferences.

Aloha,

Laurence
