R. Joseph Rodriguez is a research associate in the Division of Instructional Innovation and Assessment at The University of Texas at Austin, where he also teaches literature and language acquisition courses.
Rodriguez is the recipient of several academic, community, and research-based awards, including the NCTE Research Foundation’s Cultivating New Voices Fellow (2002-2004), Houston Mayor's Hispanic Heritage Awards Honoree in Education (2005), and Lilly Endowment Scholar (2000).
He has published in the English Leadership Quarterly (2008), College Culture, Student Success: A Longman Topics Reader (2008), Council Chronicle (2007), Institute for Recruitment of Teachers Magazine (2005), Guide to College Reading (2003) and given presentations at NCTE annual conventions (2001-2009), NCTE Conference on English Leadership, and the MELUS Annual Conference (2004). He has co-authored NCTE-adopted resolutions addressing student dropout rates and reporting, home languages, and family literacy.
Since 2006, Rodriguez has served on the Editorial Board of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE); his term expires in November 2009. In 2007, he served on the NCTE Task Force to Support and Advance Members of Color. He has served as peer reviewer for English Education (2007-2008) and English Journal (2008). In 2005, he joined the Conference on English Leadership (CEL) and currently serves on the CEL 2009 Program Committee. He is a member of Gay Straight Educators’ Alliance (GSEA), an assembly of NCTE. He has served as chair of the NCTE Committee Against Racism and Bias in the Teaching of English (2006-2008), NCTE Resolutions Committee (2004), and NCTE Secondary Nominating Committee (2006-2007).
Rodriguez previously served as director of assessment and accreditation services in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Houston from 2008 to 2009 and director of the Language Acquisition Center from 2004 to 2008. He has taught English and Spanish language arts at various levels in public schools and at the university level. He has held a variety of education specialist positions ranging from classroom instructional support and research analysis to youth development. He is currently serving on the English language arts-reading content coordinating team for the 2012 Series GED Tests, American Council of Education.
In 2001, Rodríguez founded the East End Education Project, a non-profit organization to improve the academic opportunities for students and families through family literacy programs and higher education admission workshops in the greater East End area of Houston, Texas.
He is a member of the Texas Council of Teachers of English, and now lives in Austin, Texas. He is currently at work on two research articles on literacy and will launch a community literacy project named Libre con Libros to spread "bookjoy" in 2010.
