I read Laurie Halse Anderson's Wintergirls, a novel about eating disorders - something very prevalent for both males and females in grades 7-12. Laurie stated that she wrote the book because so many girls asked her to speak to this topic. She real...
I just finished HERO by Perry Moore and was blown away. That, my friends, is a double entendre. The story is about a protagonist's coming to terms with the fact that he is gay and wants to be a Superhero, just like his father used to be before . . .
I just finished The Truth About Sparrows by Marian Hale. It was a delightful book told by the main character, Sadie. It's set in the depression, and the central theme is learning to be happy with family and friends no matter what your circumstance...
I have recently read Walter Dean Myers' Sunrise Over Fallujah, which I would recommend highly. As Fallen Angels shows us that Vietnam was a war largely fought by African-American troups, Myers shows us that the war in Iraq factors in females and y...

I mention this because one of the items included in the study, In2Books, is being introduced to Savannah Schools now, with a grant of 50 classrooms. There might be an interesting study in it for some of your faculty or a grad student. This is a supplemental reading program that uses books in different genres (realistic fiction, science, social studies, etc.) and students exchange emails about the books with adult mentors.
Earlier studies have been done at Clemson, U of I Chicago, and in DC public schools and were written up in the Phi Delta Kappan and The Reading Teacher.
All the best, Rita
Looking forward to seeing you, too, Pat! What an exciting year this has been, and I look forward to hearing more about the good work taking place at other NWP sites!
Pat, thanks for writing. Delighted to learn of your new position and role of Dean. You are the best... So, you're in Savannah?? Oh, yes, I'd love to come visit. Always a pleasure to tour the town there.
Pat--Many thanks for being a pioneer on our Ning! Keep checking--lots of great conversations are in the works for this site. Certainly looking forward to seeing you in San Antonio! --Kylene
Pat, a pleasure to find you here. It was good working with you in Florida to make learning happen for your colleagues there. How many, many years ago was that?? Yikes! I've lost count. But the memories remain... My best wishes to you, now and always. By the way, in my photo here with my ostrich...I'm the one on the right. (It's confusing, I know).
As a side note: When I was an undergraduate at Maryville College in TN, I wrote a short story about the functions of the parts of speech in my English Grammar class. Since I was also taking creative writing, I was allowed to do this. I am using it...
I am looking forward to having some time this weekend to put into practice some of the wonderful technological things I've learned about during the convention. I was inspired to write a few poems, and I began my YA novel! Finally! Thanks to Mark W...
