The British Library is the UK's national library with the biggest research collection in the world, consisting of books, manuscripts, maps, photographs, and a huge sound archive. The BL is planning to develop two major new websites to support school based teaching and learning about English literature, and about the history and variety of the English Language. I will be talking about this project in San Antonio in session M27. What is the project, and what are the challenges faced when digitisation and web technology makes it possible to make 'everything' available online? To see some of the existing learning resources available for the English curriculum and for research, check out these links.

I fell off my chair listening to the ghostly voice of Tennyson reading 'The Charge of the Light Brigade', recorded on a wax cylinder! An archive of American poets has recently been added, and there's a children's archive of specially selected poems suitable for younger listeners. Also interviews with poets, lesson ideas, and cool tools that allow you to browse by theme or poetic device, take a random lucky dip, or follow a trail through the archive recommended by someone else. All absolutely free - you just need RealPlayer on your computer and the volume on your speakers turned up. I'll be in San Antonio if you want me to show you through the site... It's at
www.poetryarchive.orgTeachitworld is a new community resource sharing site for English Language Teachers anywhere in the world. Contributors are practising teachers who share their tried and trusted resources, and get paid royalties for their work; everyone else can download these resources absolutely free in pdf form, or pay a small subscription to get them in adaptable and editable Office versions. We know teachers in mainstream English-speaking countries are using these in TESOL contexts, as well as TEFL teachers in, say, Cambodia or France, and would love to hear how these look from an American point of view. The site is here:
TeachitworldVilliers Park Education Trust works in the field of Gifted and Talented education in the UK. I'm working with them to develop online resources for gifted students (16-19 year olds) to work on independently, individually or collaboratively, in the field of Language and Linguistics. Four projects are currently available, another six will be coming on-stream during the year. Feedback always welcomed.

I hope your time is America is enjoyable and productive!
Thanks for expressing so elegantly what we're all doing in our presentation - including my bit! Like you, I'm very much looking forward to the Convention and meeting American colleagues. I know I'll learn a lot while I'm in San Antonio.
