Yes, that is a great Read Aloud, Joan.
Another great Read Aloud that is great for teaching rhyme, alliteration, and other literary elements is Oh, The Places You'll Go! by Seuss. A true classic that I use with my middle school students. They love...
I just want to say that the heading is brilliant, illustrating visually the literacy past and the literacy present via the expanse of our world. Kudos to its creator. JFK
Those working with books, words, and teaching are a unique breed...and I don't think it gets much better than what we do! I have already registered for the NCTE Convention in Philadelphia. I am addicted. And with Carol Jago at the helm, I know this will be a great one. It IS a great group of the BEST! I am honored to know you all.
Joan,
It is always good to see you. You were a great Greek modeling statue at Barry Lane's session at the Middle Education Seminar at NCTE. I just wish my camera had been ready to snap the photos of you modeling! What a great way to give a research report.

Sadly, our district is only covering Thursday and Friday night. So, we'll be leaving Saturday afternoon to head home. I have family coming into town that afternoon also.
They grow up fast don't they? He'll be testing for his yellow belt in Tae Kwon Do in just over a week! I'm a bit proud.

Hello Dr. Kaywell! I'm looking forward to seeing you in San Antonio! I hope that all is well with you and yours. Much love, Nicole
This is the first "social networking" thing I've ever participated in. Seems pretty safe. No porn yet, at least! And it is kinda fun to beg for friends knowing, at this "more mature" stage of my life, that I can handle rejection. See you in San Antonio!
Thanks for your comment! And yes, this is a great community to be a part of - not that preposition problem again! The only problem I see with this NCTE Ning is that I am unable to attend the NCTE conference this year! I would have LOVED, LOVED, LOVED to attend this year, especially with Kylene at the helm. But, the funding is not available. By the way, thanks for your congrats and compliment on my photo.

I plan on being there, but I don't know if any of our other teachers can afford to go.

So far there has been no response from NCTE in any form since the postings on the website of the Washington Post. The bottom line remains:
NCTE has approved of a plan that calls for

Approximately 8 million students in grades 4-12 are reading below grade level. Limited literacy skills cause 3,000 students to drop out of high school every day.
