Hi Jeff. Long time no talk. It's Nancy Gorrell. I'm retired after 36 years in the classroom and I'm now writing for the joy of it. I've got a publisher--Equinox Press inLondon, a great editor to work with, and two forthcoming books--Writing Poetry through the Eyes of Science: Scientific Literacy and Poetic Response and Becoming a Teacher Who Writes: Teaching as Muse. Be at the convention on Friday. New website:www. writeforyouservices.com What are you up to?
I'm working with Ed Farrell on a book of his writings, and we'd love to have you write a brief response to one of the sections. I've e-mailed you at an AOL account, but it keeps bouncing back. Would you mind e-mailing me at leslie.patterson@unt.edu about it?
There's quite a list of inspiring folks who will be presenting, so I know I'll get lots of great ideas. My hubby is making the journey with me, so it ought to be interesting to see what he thinks of the area. He'll be out exploring while I'm in the meetings. He hasn't seen too much of the US, and I keep telling him it isn't all like Florida. We'd like to take a trip back to the UK to see his family sometime within the next year or so, but we'll see how things go.
By the way, I was just looking through your zip line photos, and I decided that the zipping itself looks like fun, but I'm not sure about the stop at the end, if you know what I mean.
It's been a busy summer here, and I'm excitedly gearing up for the NCTE Affiliates meeting this weekend. It's my first, and I can't wait to meet new people and get new ideas. How's your summer been going? I do hope you will be joining us in October for the FCTE Professional Development Institute.
Hi, Jeff. Good to hear from you. Hope all is well. CEL 2009 is coming along nicely. Looking forward to seeing you there. I didn't forget that you offered your services. I do have an idea and will write you directly. Anna
Good to hear from you, too. I haven't decided about going back to NCTE- I really feel pretty superfluous these days. Millie's talking to me about possibilities. I'm very involved in supporting National Board candidates in my state and running some other PD programs in my district. And I have 6 grandchildren, all in ABQ, to keep me entertained... Take care.
Hi my old friend!! You are right - this is an amazing time to be able to work in D.C., especially at the Dept. of Ed. So much is changing and so much is possible right now. It's a lot of work, however. This week-end I'm working on a document for the Secretary about what roles teachers are uniquely qualified to fulfill at the Department, working on some advice for my boss on assurances the States can give for the Stimulus Fund, and commenting on focus areas for an evaluation of the implementation of Title III funds. Pretty overwhelming for "just a teacher," no? I'm loving it!! Hope you are doing well, and you are, from the looks of your photos. Are you going to U. of Oregon's first annual Biliteracy Conference in June?
Thanks for the welcome. It does seem that not too many teachers are from Washington. Strange, isn't it?

Jeff, it's been a long history from Florida to Seattle! You promoted technology before it was on the radar! Way to go! Do you kiss elephants, too?

Hey Chris! Well, over the past two years I've been collaborating with a professor at The State University of New York, which is a few miles from my high school. Her pre-service English teachers (seniors and graduate students) led online book clubs...
My biggest challenge is that students fluent in neighboring districts are suddenly not legally fluent in our district, as it is determined by our state through formalized test scores that students need more English in our community than in neighbo...

Wow! I like to see you hanging in the air! :)
Great pics.
