News Literacy To Be Featured at 2009 NCTE Conference

The NCTE Commission On Media invites all interested educators to attend:
Title: News Literacy: Helping Students Learn to Read Between The Lines
Friday November 20: 11:00am-12:15pm (New Media Gallery, Room 202A of the Convention Center)

Brief Description:
Two separate and unrelated “news literacy” projects are underway: both are designed to engage students in understanding how to interpret and critically question news in the 21st century. Four high school teachers, two representing each project, will describe how the project meets standards and engages young people to be smarter news consumers.

Looking for Bias, Manipulation and Stagecraft in News Images

Recently, President Obama invited physicians to the White House for a Rose Garden talk on health reform. Perhaps you, or your students, saw the images of this event in the news. If not, you can find them by going to Yahoo News and limiting your search criteria to "news photos."

The President, in one image, is surrounded at the podium by four doctors--and both racial and gender diversity are evident. In that photo, as well as wider shots, we s… Continue

How Technology Changes the Way Kids Communicate

From the current issue of PARENTING magazine: "Scientists are just starting to study the social effects of these new types of communication, and much of their research focuses on adults and teens, not kids.
