Daniel, thanks for your excellent comments about the infusion of a neo-liberal, corporate agenda shaping school policies.

Another interesting issue has to do with potential conflicts of interest related to whether these Common Core Standards will lead to national testing, in which case testing firms such as ACT, well represented on the standards writing board, will definitely benefit. One interesting aspect of the standards writing guidelines is that the standards should be "measurable," i.e., have some potential likelihood of being tested. While many of our state tests are highly problematic, the idea of a national test (common in many countries of the world) driving a homogenized curriculum does not bode well for English teaching.

Hi Daniel

MIT university is trying to build a free resource to help kids learn SAT/ACT thru the power of user-generated images and video. We are currently running a nationwide contest, challenging kids to make fun and memorable flashcards by pairing sentences and images to a common test word. There will be a small cash prize and iTunes giveaways. Due date is May 22.

More details at brainyflix.com/main/contest_rules. Do you have students or colleagues who would be interested?
