I'm so delighted you'll be presenting this weekend, Sharon. To think how many years ago we worked on the California Framework together!
See you soon/ Carol
Carol, as luck would have it, I will be at the conference in Philadelphia. I'm really excited to attend many wonderful sessions. Maybe I'll run into you! Linda
Hi, Meghan.
Ask at your hotel where the nearest train station is. The convention center and Marriott Hotel are right at the Reading train station. Hope you have a wonderful time at the conference. The program is bursting with speakers and session...
Junot Diaz, Pulitzer-prize winning author of The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, is our Thursday evening convention speaker. Diaz let us know that he enjoys responding to teachers' questions.
As you pack your bags for Philadelphia, throw in a couple of "meaty" questions for the author!
Yes, we are delighted. She fought it for a bit, having watched the family business for so many years (husband taught h.s. social studies) but said she was bored working for the Auto Club as a travel writer and applied at several private schools in LA. Prep offered her a job, and she has been thriled with them ever since. She loves 8th graders, doesn't much care for high schoolers. What did I do wrong??!!
Is yr email still the UCLA one that I have in my records?
Carol,
It was so good to talk with you in San Antonio and hear about the excitement for Philadelphia. I will not be missing that one. Thanks for your leadership. Check out the photos on my page. There is a great one of you, Joanne Yatvin, and Jeff Golub.
The NING is great to keep in touch.

The Folger is excited about the Sunday afternoon session at NCTE Philadelphia. Let me know the details as you work them out.
We are also interested in hosting a premier showing of a video of Macbeth that we have produced. The production was co-directed by Teller of Penn and Teller and was staged at the Folger in the spring. We brought in a 5-camera shoot to film it in in High Definition Video. You can get info about the original production here http://www.folger.edu/template.cfm?cid=2727.
We may even be able to get Teller and Aaron Posner, the co-director to introduce it and do a Q&A afterwards.
We'd like this to be a big thing and give away free tix at our booth and other places. We'd have to rent a local theater for a late afternoon showing.
I know it's early, but if you have any thought about this, I'd love to hear them.
Carol--Thanks for your presentation yesterday at High School Matters. I'm wondering if that list or PowerPoint is available on the ning or elsewhere. I'd like to share your book suggestions with my colleagues back home. Thanks.
Just a quick "hello" to see how things were going! I'm sure we'll talk in San Antonio. We're rolling along with our end of the preparations for Philadelphia. The excitement builds!
Hi.
I am a ninth grade English Teacher. We taught Sandra Cisneros's Mango Street this past quarter. I prefaced it with your suggestions: Good Hotdogs and Abuelito Who. The students wrote "Person"Who poems using the Abuelito template and the sensory imagery of Hot Dogs. The poems were great. After Mango Street, students created a series of vignettes-- also very successfully written. Finally, they read and uploaded their favorite vignette onto a Wiki Space, complete with music and photos. I will send you a link when I can make it public-- I hope in the next week or two.
Thanks for the very helpful plans and tips in SC in the Classroom. Students were really engaging in authentic writing.
Also, do you know how I could send the link to the Wiki page to SC herself? The kids were energized about that possibility.
Thanks,
Lorraine Smith, Philadelphia
carol,
just found out I WON a night at Howl at the Moon for Friday Nov 21st so we are having a PCTELA reception there... hope you will come - we can send you the official invitation via email. Looks like a fun venue!
Gotta say that Tech on the Go has worked for me! Carla Beard taught me how to write a self-test on Moodle, something I will definitely use! I am working with teachers to develop ACT like questions that correspond to classroom curriculum...you know...
