Hello friends,
Is anyone giving a presentation on a topic related to ESL-bilingual education at Pittsburgh? In the past the ESL Assembly has sent out a short newsletter with a list of relevant presentations. I thought that this year we could post ...
Will you or others from IU (or from this Ning) be attending the NECC conference in Washington, DC, at the end of June? I wanted to let people know there would be a Birds of a Feather session on ELLs and ed tech. I'll be there!
I'd like to make a comment about content-based ESL that you mention in your message. I'm not an ESL teacher in the USA, so I'm not familiar with the nature of content that is involved there. My view on this is that ESL teachers are first and foremost language teachers, whose job is to help students develop communicative competence so that they can function effectively in the workplace or pursue academic studies in college. Of course, if by content-based ESL is meant "light" content or subject matter, such as English for business, English for tourism, etc., i.e., ESP, that is also the job of a language teacher. However, if an ESP class is focused on content and language teaching is minimized when it should not, then that could be detrimental to students' overall performance and ultimate achievement.
I missed attending the ESL group while in San Antonio. However, I am very interested in being a part of this community. I teach ESL/English 9-12 at Mallard Creek HS in Charlotte NC. I am also completing my MAT in ESL Education at UNCC. I am currently working on research that combines the two components, ELA and ELD. Please LMK if there are any add'l opportunities to participate in discussions, presentations, etc. that involve the ESL community.
BTW, I am an IU grad! I was born/raised in B-ton. In fact, we usually spend a month "back home" every summer. Small world! :)

My word! You're a Maryvillian, too? Did something in my ancient neurons forget reading this? I confess attending my 50th college reunion in 2006. I waited tables for the alumni banquets when I was there -- it paid all of $3.00 a banquet -- and I a...
I love the way your student articulates the complexity of audience awareness and how it affects writers. Thanks so much for posting this, Meredith.
