Comment by Lauren Davis on December 8, 2008 at 10:19am - Amsco School Publications just came out with a new adolescent literacy series that is chock-full of helpful, engaging reading strategy lessons. The series is called Strategy Central for the Active Reader and there are three volumes--Literature, Nonfiction, and Information. Each book contains high-interest readings and 22 key reading strategies, taught using a before-, during-, and after-reading structure. Comment by Pamela Murawski on October 26, 2008 at 8:57pm - My 8th graders just did their first "Sketch to Stretch" and practiced making a conclusion about what they read. Let's just say they need a LOT of practice on this one.

Try this incredibly simple but quite useful analogy to reach students who are struggling with issues of audience and style. Soon they’ll be speaking to, and not at, their audience.
