We had a celebration of Writing at a Las Vegas K-12 school called West Prep. Our Congresswoman Dina Titus who co-sponsored the Congressional Resolution attended and is the gorgeous lady in the fuschia suede jacket (note her "I Published" sticker - although she hasn't YET!). About 100 kids assembled to hear the Congresswoman's remarks about writing and to share their writing with her. Monica Cortez, the assistant principal, organized the whole thing (she's the first person you see in the slideshow), as well as the really wonderful Wall of Writing with all grades and genres mixed together.

Here's a link to the Picasa gallery, courtesy of my colleague Marilyn McKinney. Hit "Play Slideshow".

We are one of the schools in Colorado Springs District 11. We had two writers in our school. One which was provided by the district and one we brought in. Both were well received by our students and staff! We are also doing the chalk writing (though later in the week - due to all the assemblies we had yesterday with the author visits).

Colorado Springs School District 11 had a "A Writer in Every School" on October 20, 2009. We have 53 schools in our district -- and each one had a local writer spend at least one hour in the building working with and talking with students about writing. 2nd graders in one school created limericks in a workshop environment; 5th graders in one school worked with a local TV reporter to draft a news story; 5th graders in another class had a mock trial, heard a real police officer talk about the notes he took about the crime, then they deliberated using the Judge's (a real judge, too, from the area) "fact sheet" before rendering a verdict; a local high school had performance poets; and one middle school invited back one of their own students (now a high school senior) who has won several local one-act play writing contests. It was an awesome day in D11.

Today I was in Bessemer, Michigan, observing one of my student teachers. Lots of writing happened there:students took notes on background information before they started reading Oedipus Rex; they also wrote in their reader's notebooks and journals. The student teacher wrote up a handout on Greek theater and also wrote notes on the board. Other students wrote in response to a short story. I wrote notes to help me prepare to write the student teacher's formal evaluation, and I have also done lots of email writing, a draft of a letter to the editor about our union, and edited a local teacher's newsletter draft. It's been a great day of writing here in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan!

I love the sidewalk chalk writing and the comic strip mural! Lively and engaging. Thanks for the photos too.

We did a sort of graffiti/Comic Strip project. I created a large comic strip mural and then our entire school (about 550 students) wrote in response to the question: What do you like to write?
The writing took place during lunch. It was pretty chaotic and amazing and the school was buzzing with energy. I had to keep asking kids, "Did you eat lunch yet?" because they all just wanted to write.
Here is a collage of the comic strip mural as it developed during the day:

We had a fantastic day writing and creating art in chalk on the blacktop. We had about 400 kids in grades 6,7,8 who really enjoyed the project and are very proud of their work. I'm so glad I did it.
