My name is Denise Padilla. I am the RtI Facilitator for White Pine County School District in Ely, Nevada. Over the last year I have been involved with a teacher research project about writers workshop. oral and written language development, and preschool studnets. I am looking for some opportunities to publish and present my findings. If you have any great ideas about where I could start or people to contact I would greatly appreciate any suggestions. Thanks.

Hi! I'm Buddy Fish. I'm an EC Professional. I taught children under 6 for 23 years. Now, I teach at the post-secondary level. I want to go back, but I'm too old to walk around on my knees all day. Yvonne sent me the following message:

Yvonne Siu-Runyan (PANA) has sent you a message on NCTE Ning -
We now have an Early Childhood Assembly. So, we now have tons of early childhood stuff going on.

Mariana Souto-Manning, Suzi Long, Vivian Vasques, and Dina Volk are people you need to meet. They are Early Childhood folks and really nice, too.

Introduce yourself to them on this NCTE NING. Tell them you are my friend.

What kinds of strategies do you use with students who do not speak at all? Strategies I'm using include: sign language to indicate "What letter my name starts with."; finger signals for water, restroom, etc.; "Speechersize" CD for oral language development; small group including the student that does not speak or make sounds practicing animal sounds; speaking with parents about progress. Any suggestions?

Kindergarten orientation is next Friday. We welcome them all in and then after a quick powerpoint in the library we have little groups move to different sections of the building for activities. Some cutting some, singing, some play, some art. My activity will involve a little booklet with photos of some staff and places in the building (thank goodness for digital photos!) and then we will read it and together find a special letter or word in the booklet. ( a few early kindergarten sight words- I , see, a, the) This little booklet will then go home and help kinders recognize a few things and people on that upcoming opening day.
It also helps parents put some names with teacher faces, this is after all more traumatic for mom and dad than the little one!
What type of 'orientation' do you do?
