Blogging Teachers

Do you have a blog where you write about the teaching of reading or writing in your classroom? It would be great to find some time to chat about blogging, and how it's made our teaching more responsive, at the conference.

I put up a new post this week where I think out loud about environmental education on my campus and the opportunities/need for transdisciplinary learning, including writing (blogging) for an authentic audience.

Gabrielle,
Your blog is awesome! The Town of Brookline is considering starting a tech. community of learning. It was supposed to be a -ning, but now -ning charges, so I suppose there will be another site out there for free.

Hello, everyone. New here. My blog's subtitle is "exploring the confluences of parenting, teaching, and the environment," but truth be told I talk less of teaching than I'd like, perhaps because that particular confluence is often hard to find.

Thanks for your response, Marcy. I do a letter of the week for parents that I send out via email. I'm toying with the idea of having a class web page that would also have a link to my letter/blog, etc. I'm not sure if this would make things easier or harder for parents. In any case, I know some parents read my blog since it's listed in my email signature. I agree this kind of communication does take a lot of thought and work but the benefits are worth it.

I e-mail them that a new blog is waiting for them to read and I give them a TINY glimpse into what it's about. Some parents read them faithfully, and some don't even bother to read the blogs. I guess it's worth it if even one parent appreciates it. It does take a lot of thought and work.

I have a teacher blog as well. I try to write in it at least twice a month but that doesn't always work out :). Marcy, I was wondering how you let your parents know that you've posted a new comment on your blog? Or, do they just know to check every day?

I write a weekly blog to inform parents what their children are learning. I remember that when I was a parent of young children, I wanted to be a fly on the wall so I could know just what my children were learning. I created this blog so parents could be flies on the wall. On my blog, I write the big ideas and the essential questions we are working on across the curriculum. I take the parents through a few lessons and I tell parents what questions they can ask their children at the dinner table so that they can have some interesting conversations. (Better than, "What did you do today?" "Nothing.") I include slideshows of the students engaging in the activities I describe.

My blog is a daily almanac that attempts to link every day of the year to the study of words and language. If you are looking for a quick, relevant lesson, it's a great place to go.
