The latest edition of the Standing Committee on Affiliates newsletter will be arriving from your regional representatives in the next few days. Please take a look at all of the important work being done by affiliates and NCTE. If you have questions or comments, don't hesitate to get in touch with your regional reps.

I just joined and I am exploring. This is the only picture I have that I can access. I am at the San Diego Zoo and my husband took this shot. I am looking forward to continued discussions and will try to visit as frequently as possible. Don't have any ideas yet, but glad to be part of the group.

I was just visiting the site and thought I would add a photo of me in a warmer climate than New Jersey. Sanibel/Captiva Island in Florida sure beats New Jersey in January!

Does anyone have creative ideas on how to build membership? Also, which affiliates have super websites? Do any affiliates have wikis in use as the main web communication mode?

How exciting! In one day, learning about blogs and wikis and nings and flickr! There's so much more to learn, but I am looking forward to what's in store for me during the next two days at NCTE!

Greetings, friends, from throughout the country. Looking forward to seeing friendly faces in San Antonio and finding out about the exciting projects going on elsewhere.

Would also like to invite all affiliate members and leaders to the concurrent session sponsored by NCTE's Standing Committee on Affiliates (SCOA). On Friday morning at 9:30, I'll be part of a pane session entitled "Raising Our Voices: Affecting Educational Policy and Informing Policymakers". I'll be joined by Susan Houser from Florida, Cindy Tyroff from Texas, and NCTE Executive Director Kent Williamson. We'll be talking about NCTE Advocacy Work, a new and exciting element of my association with NCTE. We hope you'll join us for the session and in this wonderful effort.

I am browsing the ning, and 'introducing' myself to fellow Pennsylvanians and also those in San Antonio.
Nings can help but you might have to do some 'digging' (or at least I do , maybe there is a search and sort I am not aware of?) Jan - PCTELA

The convention program for San Antonio looks amazing; I'm looking forward to seeing friends, meeting new colleagues, learning more about 21st century technology, and seeing Grover! See all of you there, proudly representing your local affiliates!

Me too, Millie. Remember to remind me about Affiliate "stuff" - OK?

Hi Millie and Carol,
I am sorry that I have to back out of the convention this year because of other commitments, but I will be looking forward to hearing all about it and submitting some materials on secondary school writing centers. I know I will have withdrawal, since this will be my first missed NCTE in over 20 years!
Also, IWCA has our big conference in Las Vegas at the end of October, and I will be glad to report on the conference, specifically on aspects dealing with secondary school writing centers. Thanks for inviting me into the conversation.
However,

Try this incredibly simple but quite useful analogy to reach students who are struggling with issues of audience and style. Soon they’ll be speaking to, and not at, their audience.

Lynette, I've also been to a lecture given by Mrs. Jago and have to agree whole heartedly with your assessment of her work. She is one of several whose message helps keep me renewed as an educator.
