I am a member of a collegial circle that is exploring teaching grammar in the 21st Century. We're researching some resources to use in our secondary classes...specifically consumable workbooks and/or graded computer programs. We would like some ideas! Please fire away!
Our district uses a program called Being A Writer which focuses on all forms of writing with a grammar component included. All students get a skill practice workbook which allows them to practice the newly taught skill throughout the week. It is a great program and it still includes that very necessary component of grammar.
Thanks, Lynne! We have so many differing opinions in my department. Some prefer Amy Benjamin's approach, but others want consumable workbooks for every student.
I suggest going to http://www.grammarnation.com where you can download a free sample of an alternative approach to grammar that incorporates a touch of theater and comedy. The book is suited to middle school and remedial high school students. Kids love this book, and I believe that their test scores will reflect it.
Hi!
We recently adopted the McDougall-Littel anthology series. It is a wonderful way to supplement the literature while differentiating for mixed-ability groups of students. In addition, McDougall provides professional articles and Best Practices Toolkit for grades six through high school. The grammar component is substantial, and materials abound for the support of grammar and writing instruction. McDougall also provides CDs which have extensive connections to technology and media support. I highly recommend it. I can bring a sample copy of the Best Practices Toolkit. I also have contacts if you would like a representative to come to your school.
Look forward to meeting you at the convention.
Valerie
